Modern society is aging at an unprecedented rate. The Social-Personality Gerontology Preconference acknowledges this demographic shift and highlights the scientific importance of understanding and integrating gerontology in modern social-personality research. The fields of social-personality psychology and aging are each growing rapidly. While both fields are independently growing in size and importance for modern psychological research, there is also an increased interest in the intersection of aging research and social-personality psychology. Many gerontologists find importance in the questions asked by social-personality psychologists for the everyday functioning of older adults. In addition, researchers in areas such as emotion, social cognition, health, and personality are also gaining interest in understanding how the integration of gerontological data can help further basic scientific answers in their research. The Social-Personality Gerontology Preconference covers a broad array of research addressing these issues including emotional processing, interpersonal relationships, and positive psychology studied using a variety of techniques from daily diaries to eye tracking to neuroimaging. Through a diverse set of symposia, an open poster session, opportunities for practical and theoretical discussions throughout the day, and a structured topical round table luncheon, this preconference will establish a core of scientists dedicated to furthering and fostering social-personality gerontology. |
